もともと強気の性格なのか？それとも単なる自己チュウなのか？アメリカ・チェス・チャンピョン「フレディ」。『ワールド・チェス・チャンピョンシップ』という、またとないEVENTの中でさえも、「フレディ」の身勝手さに、相手ロシア陣営からは罵倒され、聴衆からは冷笑され、それでも「フローレンス」は「フレディ」をかばい続けてきたが、それも既に限界に来ていることを「フレディ」にホテルで告げる。堪忍袋の緒は切れてしまい、もうこれ以上は耐えられないと「フレディ」に訴えたのだ…。そもそも「フレディ」と「フローレンス」の出逢いは、彼女の生い立ちに起因することが大きい。「フローレンス」は冷戦下にあるハンガリーに生まれ、ブタペストの反乱が起きた1956年、2才の頃、母親に連れられ祖国を後にした。「フローレンス」は反乱が鎮圧された際に「蒸発」してしまった父の消息を掴めないままでいたが、どうにかして消息を突きとめようと決心する。「フローレンス」は「フレディ」のセコンドとして7年間、英国でのチェス・トーナメントで出会って以米、ずうっと「フレディ」に仕えてきた。だが「フローレンス」と「フレディ」とは殆ど同じ年令であるにも関わらず、二人の関係は、まるで母と子の関係のようだった。「フローレンス」は、今までずうっと、大人になれきれない「フレディ」を母のような暖かい心で支えてきたが、それも今日、終わりを告げることを確信する。そう、「フローレンス」は「フレディ」に愛想を尽かしてしまったのだ。そんな「フローレンス」の心の動揺を「フレディ」は察知することはできず、二人の口論はますます激化。「フローレンス」は、本当に心から信頼できるのは自分自身だけだという決意を新たに、二人の関係は修復不可能なまでに至ってしまうのであった。
